I Choreographed a Vietnamese Pop Dance at Harvard

Hello!

Welcome to my journey to dancing and choreographing for the Harvard Asian American Dance Troupe.

A little bit about the organization. Harvard AADT repertoire includes a diverse range of dance forms including traditional, ethnic minority, martial arts, modern, ballet, hip-hop, and fusion. In AADT, students of all cultural and dance backgrounds participate in bringing the variety, skill, and vibrancy of Asian dance to the stage. AADT is one of the few dance organizations on campus that has a non-audition, all-are-welcome policy. Each school year, the troupe produces two semesterly productions, featuring over 15 dances and serving over 2500 audience members.

While I enjoyed the variety of dances that the troupe offers for its members, from Kpop, Traditional Chinese Dances, Korean Buchaechum, etc, there’s a lack of Vietnamese choreographers and hence, dances that feature Vietnamese arts, music, and culture. Yearning to represent my culture and make it more well-known to the general student body, I decided to choreograph a modern dance using a Vietnamese pop song. The videos below depict my journey from learning the dance, teaching the dance to others, to performing it.

Hope you'll enjoy it!
